Press Release

“Paintings can unfold endlessly, both spatially and temporally, without constraints. They don’t have to stop or ever resolve.” -Iva Gueorguieva

New York, New York – Ameringer | McEnery | Yohe is pleased to announce its first exhibition of works by Iva Gueorguieva. A Stitch in Graft will open on April 21, 2011 and will remain on view through May 27, 2011. A reception for the artist will take place April 21, between 6:00 and 8:00 PM. The public is welcome.

In her large-scale works, Gueorguieva creates a multi-layered, multi-dimensional system of spaces. The lines, loops, colors and cutouts transform the canvas into a kinetic landscape shuttling the eye with strange rhythm. Gueorguieva uses oil and acrylic paint, collages muslin and paper, and cuts at times directly into the surface. Each painting develops along a singular path, following different procedures, resulting each time in a different balance of narrative and abstraction, figuration and motion.

Iva Gueorguieva [Bulgaria, 1974] lives and works in Los Angeles. She received an MFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Recent solo shows include Lux Art Institute, Encinitas, CA; Angles Gallery, Los Angeles; Stichting Outline, Amsterdam, Netherlands; Pomona Museum of Art, Claremont, CA; and 2x2 Projects, Amsterdam, NL. Notable group shows include, among others, the Contemporary Art Museum at The University of South Florida, Tampa, FL; Pasadena Museum of Art, Pasadena, CA; Galerie Lelong, New York, NY; Dunn and Brown Contemporary, Dallas, TX; and The 2003 Louisiana Biennial at the Contemporary Art Center, New Orleans, LA. She is the recipient of the California Community Foundation mid-career Arts fellowship for 2010 and the Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant for 2006-07.

Gueorguieva will be exhibiting works on paper in a concurrent show at BravinLee programs in New York. Cut will be on view from April 21 – May 27, 2011.
