Press Release

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – AMERINGER | McENERY | YOHE is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent paintings and sculptures by Iva Gueorguieva. The exhibition will open on 8 September and remain on view through 8 October 2016. A public reception for the artist will be held on 8 September from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue with essays by Jaime DeSimone, Sarah Bay Gachot, and Matthew Scott McGarvey.

Iva Gueorguieva is known for investigating notions of space, seeing, and illusion in her work. Her paintings—which contain countless layers of collage—push, pull, and pulse with a dynamic energy. After spreading paper and fabric on her studio floor, the artist paints, stains, and cuts the pieces into shapes before transferring them onto canvas. For Gueorguieva,  “collage continuously disrupts and destroys the illusionistic integrity of the painting, but every subsequent response of [her] brush seeks to restore that lost illusion…The eye of the viewer trips on the cut edges of the collage, and that tactile experience pushes one back into physical or sculptural space.”

Gueorguieva’s explorations in sculpture also reflect her wonderment over space and serve as a place for her to play with edge and the illusion of an edge. Inspired by time spent traversing the landscape of the California desert, her sculptures are made of simple materials, such as collected wood and dead Joshua tree fragments that are later cast in concrete. Each sculpture embodies the density of her visual journeys.

Iva Gueorguieva’s paintings and sculptures are in constant motion—churning, floating, sinking, rising—and captivate the viewer with their subtle layering and visual complexity.
