Press Release

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - AMERINGER | McENERY | YOHE is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent works from Brooklyn based artist, Steven Charles. The exhibition will open on 13 November and remain on view through 13 December 2014. A public reception for the artist will be held on 13 November from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

Abstract painting is the most confusing dilemma I have encountered. This confusion motivates me.”

Embracing action painting and a spontaneous approach, Steven Charles does not plan his paintings. He begins by releasing bright splashes of acrylic paint straight from its vestibule to form organic shapes on panel. Once these initial marks are created, they are covered and filled in with even more layers of colorful drips of paint. Each work is obsessively woven into a dizzying sundry that oscillates between randomness and control.

Working within, and free from the bounds of different patterns, he spins intricate and finely crafted maps of his process. Verging on staggeringly cosmic, these material spans of time become richly dense, and tracing the origins within them proves impossible. Each painting contains a memory, both intuitive and reflective.

STEVEN CHARLES was born in 1967 in Birkenhead, England. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Texas in 1994 and his Master of Fine Arts degree at Temple University in Rome, Italy in 1996.

Charles has had numerous solo exhibitions including “The Upstairs Room” and “Steven Charles: Thirteen Monsters for Lightning Bolt” at Marlborough Chelsea, New York, NY; and “My Life is Perfect and I’m Always Happy,” “crclgogobaroanst,” and “Nowhere fast” at Pierogi Gallery, Brooklyn, NY.

Group exhibitions include “A Family Album: Brooklyn Collects,” Brooklyn Museum of Art, Brooklyn, NY; “Multiple Sensations,” Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, CA; “USA, Hoy—Pintura y Escultura,” Galería Marlborough, Madrid, Spain, and “Hungry Eyes,” Dalhousie Art Gallery, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Charles is the recipient of multiple awards including the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Artists’ Fellowship and The Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant.

Steven Charles lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
