ENRIQUE MARTÍNEZ CELAYA | MUSEO NACIONAL DE BELLAS ARTES DE LA HABANA

Los viajeros, 2023, Oil, wax, and charcoal on canvas.
118 x 150 in. Private collection, Panama City, Panama.

This cycle of eight paintings was created specifically for this exhibition. These works use poetry, history, children’s stories, and examples of Cuban architecture to explore the friction between the present and the past, and how this friction creates an alternate reality in memory. Of particular interest in my overall project, and in these paintings specifically, is the relationship between displacement, alienation, fragility and, confronted with them, the capacity of the imagination to create spaces of resistance and possibility.
