This year’s Fall Preview surveys the movies, shows, books, plays, exhibits, albums, and performances that our writers and editors are excited to consume this season. Below, our art list.

Pollock and Krasner meet again. Brâncusi gets a once-in-a-generation showcase at MoMA. Minnie Evans, Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson, and Scott Kahn receive more of the attention they deserve. The new season — packed with rediscoveries and undervalued established talents, younger and mid-career artists, as well as a few genuine wild cards — feels unusually open-ended. I’m optimistic, even about the provocateur who sometimes annoys me.

Miles McEnery Gallery, opens November 5

Essenhigh is one of the stranger survivors of the late-1990s New York painting boom. Few artists make fantasy feel so convincing. Trees turn into bodies, forests seem sentient, flowers transform into creatures. The result: singularly enchanted gardens.
