RICO GATSON | RIVERSIDE ART MUSEUM

Sidney, 2022, Color pencil and photograph collage on paper, 22 x 30 inches, 55.9 x 76.2 cm

Riverside Art Museum is proud to present the second West Coast solo exhibition of Rico Gatson’s work. A Brooklyn-based multimedia artist, Gatson grew up in Riverside, California. His work is influenced by optical art (“op art”) and early 20th-century Russian Constructivist propaganda posters, and through his bold geometric compositions, he highlights the complexities of Black life and its impact on American popular culture.

Works on view in Riverside are drawn from a series of Gatson’s collage-based works that focus on Black cultural heroes in an abstracted style with bold, precise lines that radiate from small cut-out photographs. These works on paper are just one stream in his oeuvre, which spans sculpture, painting, and video, sometimes in combination.

The exhibition is on view from Saturday, November 18, 2023 through Sunday, April 7, 2024 at the Riverside Art Museum in the Art Alliance Gallery.
