Press Release

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – MILES MCENERY GALLERY is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Monique van Genderen, made for her third solo presentation with the gallery. A public reception will be held for the artist on 15 November from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at 520 West 21st Street and the exhibition will be on view 15 November through 22 December. It is accompanied by a fully illustrated publication, featuring an essay by Jonathan Griffin.

Monique van Genderen has been working within the intersections of painting and installation painting for over twenty years. Her experiments with the frame of architecture, color, form, and new materials have been primary to her development as an artist. She has created a painterly language that is hyper-aware of surface and finish, producing an individualistic vocabulary of brushstrokes and mediums. Her works often suggest an abstracted landscape due to the breadth of field, biomorphic forms, and interplay of colors and translucent shapes. Continuing to intervene within the subject of painting, she often analyzes the traditions of figuration through the frame and the relationship between intimacy, spectacle, and the viewer. The subjects of her paintings can also range from the objecthood of painting, to repetition through mechanical reproduction, and to the relationships of value and time.

Van Genderen’s captivatingly dynamic paintings offer an experience not only of beauty, but also of intrigue. As Griffin comments, “...her paintings are things vividly alive, and, therefore, also affectingly vulnerable, things caught mid-flight, falling apart and falling back together. They are paintings that are going somewhere, somewhere strange and unknown, but that are also palpably aware of where they came from.”
